Last year I happened to go to the Dog Show at Muang Thong Impact Convention Center and really had a good time seeing the different dog breeds, shopping for dog products and talking to other dog lovers.
So this year, I made it a point to go to the Dog Show. This time, I had my own pooch in tow. Little Jack Jack spent the afternoon experiencing tons of sights and smells. He got to see other Beagles and play with some friendly dogs. It was a great opportunity for socilization even though he is only 3 months old. Since he had 2 series of vaccinations, I was pretty sure that he would be okay getting in contact with other vaccinated dogs.

Mostly the dog show consists of booths selling different dog product. Some products are sold at a special show discounted price and there were also new and different products being displayed. The dogs were everywhere. The majority of the dogs were Goldens, Labs, Shitzus, Poms and Chiuahauas. Following in popularity and much less common were Pugs, French Bulldogs, Beagles, Poodles and Bull Terriers. Then there were the uncommon dogs like the Rottweilers, Great Danes, Bullmastiffs, Westies and Basset Hounds. There were samples for all thedogs to taste and even free dry baths so to encouraged their owners to buy the products being sampled. I sure fell for a bunch of the booths’ gimics because I went home to two large bags of doggie products.
In addition to the product booths, there is a section for dog show and dog events, dog kennels and a two different food areas. The dog show arena has different dog show events going on with judging of according to set breed standards. The dog events area was more of a game area and had different compeitions like tug of war and cute dog tricks. The dog kennels showcased different dog farms and had puppies for sale. Hopefully, they are healthier than the puppies coming form Chatuchak Market. Once you get hungry, head over to eat some Subway’s, Dunkin’ Donuts or Thai food at the two food areas.

The admission fee for adults is only 15 baht and children and dogs get in free. If you missed the Dog Show this year or simply want to go again next year, make sure to check the Impact Convention Center website for next year’s dates. I’ll see you there.
Tiger used to think she was a cat. She’d scramble up onto the balcony ledge and walk back and forth several times before jumping down. Then for awhile she would actually jump over 2.5 meters to the ground. Luckily there were lots of bushes to break her fall and she never got hurt. She stopped this behavior for a few months and then when she started doing it again. The silly dog thought that she was a bird or something. My dad stopped it the habite completely by placing metal window coverings around the entire balcony.
Then yesterday, I noticed Jack Jack also has this stupid trait. I was walking on a different balcony with the puppy. This balcony had a wooden railing and while I was looking away from the puppy, I heard this yelp. I turned around and there was no puppy in sight…only a bit of rustling from the hibiscus plants below. I ran downstairs calling to Jack Jack and I see him running out from under the house. He’s a bit dirty, but as I check him over he appears fine. Throughout the evening I check on him and nothing seems out of the ordinary. Stupid dogs, they must think they are birds!
One thing about this new puppy of mine is that he is a voracious eater. Even though he is getting three meals a day of dog food and milk, at each meal he eats as if it will be his last. During the first few weeks Jack Jack would try to climb into the bowl as he ate and constantly was putting his paws in the food bowl. He seems to have stopped this habit, or maybe now his head is too big to permit it.
As soon as Jack Jack gets a snip of food he immediately starts circling around in search of the food. He also starts wagging his tail like crazy. Once you give start to give him his food, he will jump up at the food bowl as you are putting it down and create a big mess. Sometimes he tip over the bowl as he pushes the bowl forward while he is eating. I had to hold the bowl as he ate so that the food would not end up on the floor. I finally got him a small dog bowl that he can’t tip over. Now the bowl just gets pushed across the floor little by little from its original position.

The speed at which this little guy can consume food is amazing. In less than one minute, the entire food bowl will be empty, he is searching for more and his face is completely covered in food. He has become a little bit better over the past few weeks, but he is still a very healthy eater. His food doesn’t have to be mushed up anymore and he can eat solid dog food now. I still give him the food soaked in water for a bit though.
After every meal his belly is extended in typical puppy fashion and he seems very satisfied. But, at the next meal he acts in the exact same way. Anyone who sees him acting this way must believe that we never feed him!
I took Jack Jack to the vet last Friday and he weighed 2.2 kg after his midday meal. He got dewormed and the vet made an appointment for him to get his first shots the following Friday.
In the meantime, we fed Jack Jack 3 meals a day of dog food followed by sweetened milk at the morning and evening meals. This dog really likes to eat and goes into a feeding frenzy. In less than a minute he inhales most of the food and starts looking around for more. His stomach gets very big after he eats. He looks as if he is about to explode.
When Jack Jack went back to the vet 7 days later he weighed 2.8 kg before his midday meal. The vet was a bit shocked at the weight gain, but expected it. She owns 2 adult beagles herself and calls them “pigs, not dogs.” All in all, my little puppy has put on at least 600 grams in one week and he has definitely grown in size as well. He gets a bit more steady on his feet each day. We’ll have to wait until his next visit to the vet to see how much weight he will put on as he continues to grow and develop.
